London 6: The City of Westminster

The final volume in the revised London series will cover the historic City of Westminster, the West End of modern London. At its heart are Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, respectively the greatest medieval and Victorian monument of the capital. All around are districts each with its own character and dominant building types, each will be described in separate introductions: St James's with its clubhouses; aristocratic Mayfair; the government quarter of Whitehall; teeming Soho and Covent Garden, with their nearby theatres and cinemas; the residential stucco of Pimlico and Belgravia. The old Buildings of England descriptions will be fully revised, while thirty years of new architecture will be surveyed and assessed for the first time.
